Tommaso Cimini the founder and the life and soul of Lumina for many years, was very young when he arrived in Milan in the late '60s, after completing his technical studies. After a few years spent working for a well known lighting company, he decided to set up its own business, designing and manufacturing a table halogen lamp called Daphine all by himself and using occasional tools. Lumina was established in 1975 in a basement room.

The essential and elegant design, the exceptional function of this lamp - still one of Lumina best selling product - and its great reliability lead Daphine to meet a success that went far over the best expectations. Daphine perfectly interprets Cimini’s production philosophy, which he used to summarise in the sentence: “A small lamp for a great light.”The attention paid right from the start to the functionality and to the high quality of the product paved the way for entering foreign markets, first of all those of the United States and of Germany. In the years to follow Cimini designed other lamp lines, all still having original features, and invited many famous designers such as Yaacov Kaufman,Walter Monici, Studio DDL, Luigi Stano, Emanuele Ricci and others, to join him. The increase in activity in the beginning of the 80s forced the company to leave the small workshop and move to an 11.000 m2 location, still in Arluno, 3.500 of which are covered and which includes also a 2.000 industrial building for painting operations. The controlled companies Lumina Deutschland and Lumina Schweiz were created in 1990 in order to better address these two markets where the presence of Lumina products was widespread and had already become a tradition. Lumina continued to grow in importance and found the reasons for its increasing success in its original design, in its high quality standards, in the reliability of its products and in the philosophy of its customer service, which make all contacts with the company extremely easy and pleasant. The continuous technical and formal research and the commercial awareness of Lumina took to the several
acknowledgements obtained from Institutions and Museums in America and Europe and from clients and economic operators all over the world. Lumina products are sold in more than thirty-five countries worldwide through a network of more than thirty agents and exclusive importers, which add to our many direct clients. Quality standards and customer assistance are ensured by the company internal design system and by its production cycle: the design process, the engineering of both products and tools, the prototype manufacturing and mounting are all performed within the company premises: painting is performed externally by one
of Lumina directly controlled company. Before his sudden death in an airplane accident in 1997 Tommaso Cimini managed to create a company structure that relies on skilled managers, technicians and operators and guided by his two sons Ettore and Andrea. Such structure ensures the company’s continuity and development under the same philosophy implemented by its founder.
